I started Labor Day weekend off with breakfast with a friend at an oatmeal bar in the West Village. While it's relatively straightforward to curb my spending during the week - pack a lunch every day and hit the gym instead of the bar after work - weekends tend to be full of expensive activities, from late-night cab rides and mozzarella stick deliveries to $18 eggs at brunch the next morning. I started off September with a generous portion of bacon pumpkin oatmeal - it's delicious, I swear. So after paying rent, I put half of what remained of my monthly paycheck in savings and lived off the other half for the entirety of September. And since I wasn't going to move out of NYC just for a monthlong experiment, to make the project more realistic I decided to count disposable income as everything after rent. After crunching the numbers with my editor for a solid half-hour, we concluded there was no way I could put away 70% of my total income for a month and still afford both rent and food, so I aimed to save 50% of my disposable income instead.īecause I live in New York City, my rent is higher than it would be in most places in the country. While I have no plans to retire early, I wanted to see firsthand how attainable that lifestyle is.
